This slide presentation outlines a novel biological treatment approach for the removal of algal metabolites. Topics covered include: an introduction to algal metabolites including adverse impact on potable water supply, safety and aesthetics concern, potential regional impact, regulations to monitor and control algal metabolites; algal metabolite management strategies including conventional treatment, chlorine adversely affects biofiltration, metabolite degradation kinetics, additional substrate enhancement; ozone-enhanced biofiltration including ozone increasing availability of primary substrates, time requirement for biofilter acclimation, ozone-BAC removal of high levels of metabolites, limited effects of ozone-enhanced biofiltration; substrate-enhanced biofiltration including need for ozone eliminated, three-phase testing evaluation, bioacclimation setup conditions, “steady-state” setup conditions, and preliminary cost analysis.
